Schools Programme Grows Trees and Minds

Press Release : 7 July 2011

Tree Planting in Kent School

Carbon Footprint Ltd, the carbon management & carbon offset specialists, has planted over 6000 trees this season thanks to pledges by their business and personal clients. Tree planting helps to combat climate change, as well as providing habitats for wildlife and supporting biodiversity. In addition, a large number of these trees have been planted in school locations, where both the planting and care helps engage school children to get involved and take care of their environment.

Over the planting season of Winter 2010 and Spring 2011, Carbon Footprint Ltd have planted over 6000 trees right across the UK on behalf of businesses and individuals. Some of these helped create new biodiversity woodlands but importantly 25 schools also received a delivery of saplings.

All levels of education were represented, from nurseries like Rye Hills in Northampton to colleges such as Telford College of Arts and Technology. One of the schools to receive trees was Mid Yell Junior High on Shetland, which is Carbon Footprint Ltd’s most northerly planting so far!

The planting season traditionally runs from November to March, when the young trees are dormant but some flexibility was needed this time. Despite the extreme weather this year, which included the heavy snowfall in the winter followed by drought in the spring, the saplings were all planted before the mild weather began. The team is already planning next season’s planting which will start in earnest when schools reopen after the summer break.

The UK tree planting programme also helps educate school children about environmental awareness, some even choose to get involved with the actual planting and with their care.

Said Dr Wendy Buckley, director of Carbon Footprint Ltd

“Tree planting is a great activity that actively engages school children, making all the text books and news stories on the environment, climate change and going carbon neutral come to life. It is essential to engage our children to help safeguard the future”.

She added

“Our clients’ contributions will resonate in the minds of the school children, encouraging them to be aware of how their choices affect climate change and more broadly to care for the environment”.
