Start with a clear reporting period and the activities you want to measure. Consistent records make your results more useful.
Decide which site, company activities and dates your calculation covers. Record what is included and what still needs collecting.
Enter consumption and travel records in the calculator. Emission factors convert these activities into tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e).
Check the entries and any gaps, save the report and identify where you can reduce emissions. Keep the underlying bills and records alongside your calculation.
Business emissions are grouped into three scopes. Your footprint depends on the activities you include, the data you enter and the calculation methods you use.
Emissions from sources your business owns or controls, such as fuel used in boilers and company vehicles. Refrigerant leaks can also be relevant to a complete inventory.
Emissions associated with purchased electricity, heat, steam and cooling. Electricity methods and factors need to reflect the location and reporting approach.
Other indirect emissions, such as business travel, purchased goods, freight, waste and employee commuting. Relevant categories vary with your business.
Use your results to prioritise the activities contributing most to your footprint. Look at heating and electricity efficiency, travel choices and purchasing decisions. Set actions, assign owners and track progress using a consistent reporting boundary.
You can use a calculation from another tool or a consultant. Enter the tonnes of CO₂e you want to offset in the box above, then review the available projects and purchase details in our store.
Keep your measured emissions and carbon credit purchases recorded separately. Purchasing credits supports climate projects; it does not reduce the emissions shown in your inventory or automatically certify your business as carbon neutral.

We recommend Sustrax Lite for SMEs starting with a straightforward annual footprint for one site. If you need more input capacity or sites, compare the Lite upgrades. For monthly tracking and a team workflow, explore Sustrax MX.
Sustrax Lite has a free plan with activity input limits. You need an account to use it. Carbon credit purchases, paid software plans and consultancy are separate. Review the current plan comparison before choosing.
Lite is a free starting plan for a simple business footprint. The free seven-day MX trial lets you explore the broader platform. MX is a paid product after the trial; check the current terms and the features included in your chosen package.
CO₂e means carbon dioxide equivalent: a common unit used to express the climate impact of different greenhouse gases. Enter your footprint in tonnes of CO₂e in the offset box. If your report uses kilograms, divide by 1,000 first: 25,000 kg CO₂e equals 25 tonnes CO₂e.
Yes. Use the relevant total from your report or another calculator. Confirm its reporting period, units and included activities, then enter the amount you want to offset. You do not need to recalculate it in Lite first.
Only the activities you enter are included. A complete company inventory may need additional categories, sites or methods. Check your reporting boundary and data gaps, and choose suitable software or expert support for the coverage you need.
Businesses can explore the Sustrax options here. Before calculating, check that your plan supports the country, electricity factors and activity types you need. For operations spanning several countries, ask our team about the right setup.
The results can help you assemble emissions data. Check that the boundary, categories, period and methodology meet the specific reporting request. A calculator report is not itself independent verification. Explore our verification and assurance services if you need a reviewed inventory.
The Sustrax calculation engine uses UK Government emission factors, with additional sources for supported activities and locations. Check the factor source and year used for your records. For more about the platform and its emissions database, see Sustrax software.
