Forests are more than just carbon. In the Cikel project, biodiversity plays a vital role. The Cikel area is part of the Amazon, the largest remaining rainforest on our planet. The Amazon is known for its amazing biodiversity; it contains 15% of all species. The Cikel area is home to some endangered species, such as the rare Ka’apori monkey, that rely on the forest for their survival.

The CIKEL Project is located in Para State, Brazil, where 63% of the Amazon Rainforest has already been lost. By using sustainable logging practices certified by the Forest Stewardship Council®, CIKEL will continue to avoid the deforestation of 27.4 thousand hectares of rainforest which would have been deforested had traditional logging practices been used. The company is also intensifying and improving its practices to support the sustainable social development, maintaining and improving the biodiversity monitoring n the framework of FSC certification and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) activities.

Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) was originated by the United Nations to help stop the destruction of the world’s forests. “REDD+” goes beyond deforestation and includes the role of conservation, community development and job creation, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks among other benefits.

Social and Sustainability Benefits

Protecting the forest leads to social benefits for the people living in the surrounding area who depend on the forest.

  • Opportunities for Employment
  • Availability of forest area to scientific research of local university
  • Preserves carbon stored in the forest’s living biomass
  • Protects the biodiversity that depends on the forest’s ecosystem
  • Improvement of quality of life of project stakeholders through education, schools and improved medical facilities
